The cradle of avant-garde music – “Improdimensija”, already this Wednesday, June 1, invites music lovers to a showdown with saxophonist André Vida from the USA, Dovydas Stalmokas, Liudas Mockūnas and double bassist Mark Tokar and drummer Vladimir Tarasov, who unexpectedly joined the concert.
“After the start of the Russian war against Ukraine, Tokar volunteered to defend his homeland, so the concert on June 1 is a real surprise for us. After receiving permission from Kyiv to leave Ukraine for 10 days, he came to perform at the “Vilnius Mama Jazz” festival, but after his performance there, he decided to join the “Improdimensija” event. Considering Marko’s talent and the difficult part of his homeland, it will be a great honor for us to see him on the “Improdimensija” stage, especially with the devilishly talented saxophonist A. Vida, – says the saxophonist Liudas Mockūnas, the founder of “Improdimensija” and adds – we are united with Ukraine and all during the concert we will allocate the collected funds to this country.”
Double bassist Mark Tokar graduated in classical guitar at the S. Liudkevicius College of Music in Lviv, and then double bass at the K. Szymanowski Jazz Academy in Katowice (Poland). He is a well-known musician to the Lithuanian public. Joint projects with Petras Vyšniauskas and Arkadij Gotesman, performances at the “Vilnius Jazz” or “Vilnius Mama Jazz” festivals allowed the jazz lovers of our country to become convinced of this musician’s unique character and sound appealing to the ears and heart.
In 2005-2006, Mark was the artistic director of the Ukrainian and Polish festival “Jazz Bez”, organized the “Metro Jazz” series of concerts at the Lviv Philharmonic. He is the leader of the international projects Leo’m’art, Mark Tokar’s Quintet and Avtokar, a member of Ken Vandermark’s project Resonance, plays in the groups Undivided, Five Spot, Four, Varpaj and Yatoku. Before the war, Mark was actively performing in the USA and Europe, as well as regularly giving lectures at various jazz schools.
The artist has collaborated with many improvisational music stars, including Bobby Few, Perry Robinson, Steve Swell, Michael Zerang, Martin Küchen, Tim Daisy, Dave Rempis, Fred Frith, Klaus Kugel and Arkady Šilkloper, Mark Sanders and many others. .
A. Vida is an American saxophonist of Hungarian origin, avant-garde musician, lyricist and composer of experimental music, who lives and works in Berlin. His coordinated projects with Albanian contemporary art icon Anri Sala have been presented at The Serpentine Gallery and Frieze Art Fair in London, New Museum in New York and many other important cultural spaces.
A. Vida was a member of Anthony Braxton’s Ghost Trance Ensemble, a founder of the New York collective CTIA, a member of the psychedelic, avant-garde folk New York group The Tower Recordings, collaborated with such artists as Elton John, Cecil Taylor, Jim O’Rourke , Hildur Gudnadottir, Mocky and many others.
The duo of André and Mark will not appear alone on the “Improdimensijos” stage. They will be assisted by three great improvisers of our country – saxophonists Liudas Mockūnas and Dovydas Stalmokas and legendary percussionist Vladimir Tarasovas. Different generations, different musical experiences, but the same unshakable desire for freedom.
“How will June 1st sound?” I have no doubt that in A. Vida’s solo performance there will be no shortage of sounds influenced by A. Braxton’s school, which has split between modern academic music and jazz traditions. Of course, only with A. Vida’s typical tizzy. And the performance of the quintet will be full of spontaneity. Everything will depend on what will be in our heads and hearts that night. Maybe we’ll play soft and quiet, or maybe we’ll play rough and hard. But I think there will be both this and that,” says L. Mockūnas, the soul of “Improdimensija”.
