Tony and Magda debuted as a duo in 2002. and has become an integral part of the improvisational music scene for twenty years, especially appreciated by those who like subtle, contemplative, spontaneous waves of sounds. For those looking for a brotzman suite, Spill may seem too soft a lamb, but for those looking to curl up in a cozy introverted bed, the Tony and Magda duet is a great choice.
Looking at both Tony’s and Maya’s biographies, it seems that their accomplishments would be enough for at least a few more musicians. Concerts in various corners of the world with the most relevant and influential performers of avant-garde jazz and improvisational music, studies at prestigious academic institutions and numerous awards. However, the most important thing is not with whom, when and where they have played, but the music they create.
Over the past 20 years, Magda has developed a distinctive musical vocabulary characterized by extensive application of advanced techniques. Using both the details hidden inside the piano and the external features of the case, Ms. Mayas takes this instrument to a whole new level and expands its sonic spectrum as if to infinity.
Unlike Magda, Tony does not modify his instrument – the drums – too much. He usually plays fairly standard percussion sets, but this does not prevent him from revealing a wide palette of sounds and rhythmic structures, which organically intertwine with the sophisticated sound threads of Magda’s prepared piano and plunge the listener into a meditative state. It’s not for nothing that this founding member of the world-acclaimed trio The Necks is considered one of Australia’s most creative and daring musicians and a must-hear.
In addition to the Tony and Mayas duet, the “Improdimensijos” team will also be invited to listen to the trio of multi-instrumentalist and composer Arno Mikalkėnas, violinist and member of the duo “Twenty Fingers Duo” Lora Kmieliauskaitė, and cellist Sergio Castrillon from Colombia at the concert on October 27.
These three musicians are united by an interdisciplinary approach to music and art in general. Their musical trajectories often intersect with theatre, performance or literature. In addition, both Arnas, Lora and Sergio actively create contemporary academic music in bars, where they feel particularly free and constantly discover unexpected spaces for self-expression.
Arnas, Lora and Sergio are tight-lipped about the October 27 show. The musicians want the listener to come to the concert without any preconceived notions and experience the music they create in the present moment. Of course, it will probably be a synthesis of modern academic and improvisational music, but considering the breadth of these genres, the most unexpected compositional twists can be expected on the stage.
